Yoga: More Than Just Physical Exercise
The practice of yoga can have a profound influence on five main areas of
an individual's life: the mental, the emotional, the physical, the
behavioral, and the spiritual.
Mentally, yoga calms the mind, keeping an individual alert yet relaxed,
more intellectually clear, and better able to concentrate.
Emotionally, yoga frees the mind from stress, anxiety, worry, and
tension. It can make a person more sensitive, caring, and compassionate,
which can enhance interpersonal and professional relationships.
Physically, yoga makes the body strong, fit, and flexible. It boosts the
immune system and can alleviate physical ailments such as arthritis,
heart disease, and diabetes, and is especially effective in reducing
stress-related illness.
Behaviorally, yoga redirects energy that might otherwise be wasted or
unwisely used in behaviors that may be harmful to one's health or
harmful to others. Yoga promotes balance and harmony with others as well
as peace of mind.
Spiritually, yoga helps us to live for something larger than just
ourselves and our immediate family. It helps us to bring everything that
we do in life in harmony with the Supreme. The word "yoga" actually
means "union"—union between the individual being and the Supreme Being.
